Na een etappezege bij hun debuut in de Dakar Rally en twee overwinningen in het afgelopen W2RC-seizoen, keren de Dacia Sandriders terug naar Saoedi-Arabië. Met vier equipes mikt het team op nieuwe successen in enkele van de meest uitdagende gebieden van het koninkrijk.

Twee weken lang strijden de Dacia Sandriders tegen de klok, over zandduinen, verraderlijke pistes en rotsachtige bergpassen met het doel om het nieuwe W2RC-seizoen krachtig te beginnen.

Vier van de meest ervaren coureurs en navigatoren binnen de rallywereld nemen het op tegen de 7.994 kilometer lange route, die begint en eindigt in de havenstad Yanbu aan de Rode Zee.

Nasser Al-Attiyah brengt niet alleen pure snelheid, maar ook jarenlange ervaring mee. Met 21 Dakar-deelnames, vijf overwinningen, drie W2RC-titels en een tweede plaats in het vorige seizoen, is de 55-jarige Qatarees een absolute troef voor het team. Hij vormt opnieuw een duo met de Belgische navigator Fabian Lurquin.

Cristina Gutiérrez en Pablo Moreno bewezen zich in de Dakar Rally van 2025 als toegewijde teamspelers. Dit jaar willen ze hun eigen ambities waarmaken. Tijdens hun eerdere drie W2RC-deelnames voor de Dacia Sandriders lieten ze al veel potentieel zien.

Sébastien Loeb is negenvoudig wereldkampioen rally en staat aan de vooravond van zijn tiende deelname aan de Dakar Rally. Aan zijn zijde staat de Franse navigator Édouard Boulanger, de W2RC-kampioen van 2025. Na een voortijdige uitval vorig jaar op de derde etappe, als gevolg van schade na een crash, is de 51-jarige Loeb vastbesloten om zijn hoogste Dakar-klassering – drie keer tweede – eindelijk te verbeteren.

Met de uitbreiding van drie naar vier auto’s wordt ook het team versterkt. Nieuwkomer Lucas Moraes, de regerend wereldkampioen rally-raid uit Brazilië, vormt een team met zijn nieuwe navigator Dennis Zenz uit Duitsland. Moraes eindigde in 2023 als derde bij zijn Dakar-debuut, terwijl Zenz datzelfde jaar als tweede eindigde in zijn klasse.

De vier equipes starten in de geüpdatete Dacia Sandrider met vierwielaandrijving, die rijdt op duurzame ARAMCO-brandstof en is uitgerust met BFGoodrich banden.

DACIA SANDRIDER: WAT IS ER NIEUW IN 2026

De Dacia Sandrider is voor de Dakar Rally van 2026 op meerdere punten doorontwikkeld. De belangrijkste verbeteringen richten zich op gewichtsbesparing, koelprestaties, zicht, betrouwbaarheid en rijcomfort.

De carrosserie is voorzien van lichtere panelen, wat de wendbaarheid en efficiëntie ten goede komt. Het achterste gedeelte is opnieuw ontworpen, waarbij de kofferbakopbouw verwijderd werd en vervangen is door een nieuwe achterplaat. Speciaal voor de Dakar Rally kreeg het model een aangepaste luchtinlaat met een korte snorkel, evenals een opnieuw geplaatst luchtfilterbox.

Om de koelcapaciteit ook bij gedeeltelijke blokkades op peil te houden, is het ontwerp van de achterste radiateurgrille geoptimaliseerd. Aan de voorkant zorgt een extra schuimfilter in de grille ervoor dat er minder zand in de ventilator terechtkomt. De ventilatormotoren zelf zijn vervangen door exemplaren met een hogere draaisnelheid en verbeterde elektronica, wat de betrouwbaarheid verhoogt. Daarnaast is een watergekoelde DC-DC-unit toegevoegd, zodat de koeling minder afhankelijk is van rijwind.

Voor beter zicht vooruit tussen motorkap en bumper is de LED-behuizing van de koplampen verwijderd. Ook is de LED-verlichting verbeterd, met krachtigere lampen voor beter zicht tijdens nachtelijke etappes. Voor extra veiligheid tijdens de etappes in de duinen is een vlaggenmast toegevoegd.

De ophanging is versterkt met robuustere bovenste draagarmen. De koppeling kreeg een klemmechanisme met lagere klemkracht. De vertanding van de voorste aandrijfas is opnieuw ontworpen voor langduriger gebruik. Daarnaast is de koppelmeter voorzien van een begrenzer om overbelasting te voorkomen.

Om de betrouwbaarheid van de motor verder te verhogen, zijn nieuwe FIA-goedgekeurde drijfstangen toegepast en is de motormanagementsoftware geoptimaliseerd. Hierdoor wordt het vermogen binnen de FIA-limieten efficiënter verdeeld en het risico op overbelasting verminderd.

Tot slot beschikt de auto over een nieuw on-board camerasysteem voor prestatieanalyse en is er een optioneel helmcoolingsysteem beschikbaar voor extreem warme omstandigheden.

DAKAR RALLY 2026: ROUTE IN SHORT

The 48th Dakar Rally, and the seventh to be based in Saudi Arabia, consists of 4840 competitive kilometres and a total distance of 7994 kilometres divided between 13 stages. The event begins with the Prologue over a 23-kilometre timed route around Yanbu on January 3, which is used to determine the starting order for the opening stage. Stage 1 on January 4 starts and finishes in Yanbu before the action heads north to Alula on January 5 and then east to Hail via the first of two Marathon stages. The format requires crews to overnight in remote camps with only limited resources available and no technical back-up from their teams. The competition is set to reach Hail on January 8 with the 920-kilometre Stage 6 – the rally’s longest – following on January 9 ahead of the rest day in Riyadh, the Saudi capital. The race back to Yanbu begins on January 11 and takes in the Wadi Ad-Dawasir loop stage on January 12. At 481 kilometres, no timed section is longer on the event. The second Marathon stage begins on January 13 with the deciding Stage 13 starting and finishing in Yanbu on January 17. While ambient temperatures are expected to be between 11-21 degrees centigrade during the day, at night they likely to hover between zero and six degrees.

DAKAR RALLY 2025 REVISITE

Having set finishing the gruelling W2RC season opener as its key target, it was a case of mission accomplished for The Dacia Sandriders when two of its three entries crossed the finish line, a fine achievement for a new team contesting such a demanding event for the first time. As well as gaining vital experience along the 7828-kilometre route, The Dacia Sandriders savoured several notable highlights. They included a stage win for Nasser Al-Attiyah and Édouard Boulanger, four top-10 stage times from Cristina Gutiérrez and Pablo Moreno, plus some impressive performances by Sébastien Loeb and Fabian Lurquin before their early exit due to accident damage. Al-Attiyah and Boulanger fought valiantly for the final podium place before settling for fourth in the overall ranking to underline the pace and potential of the Dacia Sandrider.

Their stage victory meant Al-Attiyah, who was second quickest three times, became the only driver in Dakar Rally history to clock a fastest stage time in 18 consecutive participations.

NAVIGATOR NOTES: ZENZ’S THREE-POINT PLAN FOR SUCCESS

The Dacia Sandriders’ four navigators Édouard Boulanger, Fabian Lurquin, Pablo Moreno and Dennis Zenz will perform crucial roles on the Dakar Rally. Team newcomer Zenz has revealed his pre-event preparations.

“I put our preparation into three key parts. The first is the fitness part. We need to have very good strength in the core and in the neck because we have nothing to hold on to except our remote-control device, so this is a priority for us. It’s also important to have good endurance because we have very long days, very demanding stages and we need to stay concentrated for a long time every day for two weeks. The second part is the route information we get from the organiser, which intentionally is not a lot. But we are now in the seventh year of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia so we have some data from the past that we can look into to see how difficult the terrain was, how difficult the navigation was.
